organic dried apples

Certified Organic Apple Chips from farms in our area.

Organic and dried at a low temperature. Crunchy, sweet and very tasty.

$20.00

Organic Apple Peel Powder from the South Okanagan, BC.

The peel is the most nutritious part of the apple. In fact, apple peel has been shown to contain up to six times the polyphenols including flavonoids as apple flesh, giving it tremendous antioxidant activity. Apples are excellent sources of fiber (about 2-3 grams per apple), which can improve bowel movements and so-called “transit time.” This apple fiber, or pectin, helps digestion because it helps turn water into a gel in the intestines, which slows down the digestive process.

Soluble fiber is known to soak up toxins so they are not reabsorbed as well as support a healthy microbiome in the gut. The pectin is largely found in the skin. The ability of apples to reduce serum total cholesterol has been attributed mainly to the fiber fraction, pectin in particular and polyphenols may also play an important role.

The polyphenols include the flavanols called proanthocyanidins and catechins. Previous studies have found polyphenols can lower total cholesterol levels, raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol, inhibit LDL (“bad”) cholesterol oxidation, and block inflammatory responses in atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries—the leading cause of death worldwide.

Some benefits:

• In vitro research confirmed the apple peels modulate the inflammation response.

• Reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes.

• Reduces the risk of lung and colon cancer.

• Improves microbiota composition. That’s because pectin in apples is a fiber, which is the food source of bacteria. One study, which also used two apples a day, found that after two weeks, the two apples a day increased the numbers of bifidobacterium and lactobacillus in stool samples of the people being studied.

• Tastes great

Ashwagandha from India

Ashwagandha is a powerful plant; It is a member of the Solanaceae family with over 4,000 years of traditional use in its native India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Ashwagandha is classified as a Medharasayan, which is the Ayurvedic category of foods and nutrients that promote learning and memory retrieval. Sometimes referred to as “Indian Ginseng,” it is traditionally used in conditions of debility, emaciation, impotence, and premature aging. The translation of Ashwagandha roughly is “the smell and strength of a horse”, alluding to its aphrodisiac properties. This plant is also considered a Tonic and an Adaptogen. Due to the potential benefits of ashwagandha in sleep, it is used to help promote normal sleep patterns and encourage a healthy inflammatory response.

1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Researchers have reported that Ashwagandha blocked the stress pathway in the brains of rats by regulating chemical signaling in the nervous system. In a 60-day study in 64 people with chronic stress, those in the group that supplemented with ashwagandha reported a 69% reduction in anxiety and insomnia, on average, compared with 11% in the placebo group. In another 6-week study, 88% of people who took ashwagandha reported a reduction in anxiety, compared with 50% of those who took a placebo.

2. Anti-Cancer Properties: Several studies have shown ashwagandha contains compounds that may help fight certain types of cancer. Researchers aren’t sure how as of yet, but extracts in the herb seem to limit or inhibit the activity of cancer cells in breast, colon, prostate, ovarian, lung, and brain cancers. It does the same for thyroid, gastrointestinal, cervix, and skin (melanoma) cancers. Ashwagandha is also generally considered safe to use with traditional cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Some experts say it may ease certain side effects, like a weak immune system. However, most of these studies have been done on cancer cells specifically or animals with cancer, and not humans.

3. Reduces Cortisol Levels: Cortisol is widely known as a stress hormone given that your adrenal glands release it in response to stress as well as when your blood sugar levels get too low. In one study in chronically stressed adults, those who supplemented with ashwagandha had significantly greater reductions in cortisol compared with the control group. Those taking the highest dose experienced a 30% reduction, on average.

4. Reduces Blood Sugar: Several studies have shown that ashwagandha reduces blood sugar levels. In a 4-week study in people with schizophrenia, those treated with ashwagandha had an average reduction in fasting blood sugar levels of 13.5 mg/dL, compared with 4.5 mg/dL in those who received a placebo.

5. Reduces Inflammation: Several animal studies have shown that ashwagandha helps decrease inflammation. Studies in humans have found that it increases the activity of natural killer cells, which are immune cells that fight infection and help you stay healthy. It has also been shown to decrease markers of inflammation, such as C-reactive protein (CRP). This marker is linked to an increased risk of heart disease. In one controlled study, the group who took 250 mg of standardized ashwagandha extract daily had a 36% decrease in CRP, on average, compared with a 6% decrease in the placebo group.

6. Increases Testosterone in Men In a study containing 75 infertile men, the group treated with ashwagandha showed increased sperm count and motility, which lead researchers to believe Ashwagandha supplements may have powerful effects on testosterone levels and reproductive health. In another study, men who received ashwagandha for stress experienced higher antioxidant levels and overall improved sperm quality. After just 3 months of treatment, a whopping 14% of the men’s partners had become pregnant.

7. Increases Strength and Exercise Performance: In a study with healthy young adults who took 500 milligrams of ashwagandha daily for 8 weeks, it determined they had more speed and strength during exercise than people who took a placebo. They also demonstrated better breathing, taking in more oxygen. In a study to determine a safe and effective dosage for ashwagandha, healthy men who took 750–1,250 mg of pulverized ashwagandha root per day gained muscle strength after 30 days. In another study, those who took ashwagandha had significantly greater gains in muscle strength and size. It also more than doubled their reductions in body fat percentage, compared with the placebo group.

8. Reduce Depression: This has not been thoroughly studied, however, limited research done has shown that ashwagandha possibly has a positive effect in reducing depression. In one controlled 60-day study in 64 stressed adults, those who took 600 mg of high-concentration ashwagandha extract per day reported a 79% reduction in severe depression, while the placebo group reported a 10% increase.

9. Lower Cholesterol and Triglycerides: In addition to its well-known and documented anti-inflammatory effects, ashwagandha may help improve heart health by reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In particular, animal studies have found that it significantly decreases levels of these blood fats. One animal study in rats found that it lowered total cholesterol and triglyceride levels by 53% and nearly 45%, respectively. In a 60-day study in chronically stressed adults, the group taking the highest dosage of standardized ashwagandha extract experienced a 17% decrease in LDL (bad) cholesterol and an 11% decrease in triglycerides, on average.

10. Improve Memory: Several test-tube and animal studies have suggested that ashwagandha may mitigate memory and brain function problems caused by injury or disease, and it promotes antioxidant activity that protects nerve cells from harmful free radicals. In one study, rats with epilepsy that were treated with ashwagandha had nearly a complete reversal of spatial memory impairment. Likely this was caused by a reduction in oxidative stress.

11. Improve Sleep: I’m big on sleep quality (as some readers may already know), which means I examine multiple ways exercise, hydration, diet, and supplementation can improve sleep. Ashwagandha may improve sleep according to one study with humans that showed taking 300 milligrams of the herb two times daily improved sleep. Another study on animals found that the triethylene glycol in ashwagandha is what brings sleep on.

How to Take Ashwagandha: It’s best to take 1/4-1/2 tsp of Ashwghanda with food, twice daily. Personally, I prefer to take the first dose in the morning and the second in the evening. On days when I’m intermittent fasting, I’ll take it in the afternoon and evening once I have broken fast.

Conclusion: It may be worth considering adding Ashwghanda to your supplement regimen. However, I do suggest checking if there is any potential conflict with existing supplements or medications you may be taking. Often, it’s best to check with your doctor if it makes sense for you to begin taking Ashwagandha. However, it’s worth noting from my personal experience with doctors that many of them have no clue about holistic or natural herbs and remedies, so doing your own diligence/research may be more beneficial when considering taking Ashwagandha.

Certified Organic Baobab from South Africa.

The Baobab, Adansonia digitata, also known as the upside down tree, and monkey bread tree, is a drought-tolerant tree common to much of sub-Saharan Africa.

It is one of the oldest trees on the planet!  It reaches heights of between 5–25 m (in rare cases 30 m) tall, and up to 7 m (in rare cases 11 m) in trunk diameter. This is a very versatile tree and the young leaves, which can either be palmate or simple, are often picked and eaten as a form of spinach. The leaves are also dried as a coarser tea cut.

The fruit is found inside hard, coconut-shaped, pods that hang upside-down from the trees. The pulp dries naturally on the tree, so there is no heat extraction, freeze-drying or pasteurization involved in the processing. Only a mechanical process is used to obtain the soft, powdery pulp. It has a unique pleasant flavor reminiscent of pear with a mild slightly acidic after taste due to its high percentage of organic acids such as citric acid, tartaric acid, malic acid and succinic acid.

Benefits:

  • Incredible concentration vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants
  • 6 x more vitamin C than oranges (300mg/100g)
  • Thiamine (Vitamin B1) and Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) contribute to increased energy levels
  • Boosts the immune system and reduce fatigue
  • The vitamin C increases the absorption of iron and calcium. 2 x more calcium than milk (280 mg/100g) 6 x more potassium that bananas (150 mg/100g) 30 x more fiber than lettuce (44 g/100g)
  • The high fiber content benefits the digestive and intestinal system
  • 2 x more antioxidants that Goji berries (25.000 umole TE/100g). The high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity of polysaccharides can aid in inflammation reduction.
  • More iron than red meat. The high content of Iron, Potassium and vital blood clotting ingredients can help support the circulatory system
  • Low in sugar and fat

The nutritional profile and properties of the Baobab Pulp make it an interesting new ingredient for the food, nutraceutical, beverage and cosmetic industries. It can be used in a variety of formulations to provide nutritional fortification, flavor enhancement, viscosity, texture modification and a natural source of nutrients.

Applications/Use: Energy bars and drinks, fruit smoothies, ice creams, jams, sauces, chocolate, baked goods, yogurt. Taking it every day will supplement your recommended daily allowance of vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants.

Certified Organic Black Turtle Beans from Argentina.

Also known as black-seeded beans or simply black beans, turtle beans are beans that are distinguished by their black skin over a light tan or cream flesh. Turtle beans tend to be somewhat smaller than other types of beans, and offer a slightly sweet taste to any recipe that calls for the inclusion of the beans.

Native to South America, the beans are now grown in several parts of Mexico and the Caribbean, and are often included in many different Mexican and Latin American recipes. The beans should be allowed to soak overnight for the best results in terms of consistency. Before cooking the turtle beans, they should be thoroughly drained, and rinsed in a colander. There are a number of different ways to season the beans, including the use of a small amount of salt and a little bit of olive oil.

brazil nuts

Brazil nuts, which happen to actually be seeds, grow on one of the largest and longest-lived trees in the Amazon rainforest. They can grow up to 164 ft tall and often live up to 1000 years! A single tree can also produce up to 250 lbs of brazil nuts.

Well known as the best food-source of Selenium, a powerful antioxidant, brazil nuts are also a good source of magnesium, copper and thiamine. Other potential health benefits include: anti-inflammatory, anticancer, mood lifting, lowering cholesterol and supporting thyroid health.

*To avoid intaking too much selenium, it is recommended to not consume more than four or five brazil nuts per day (if you are consuming them daily).

Cases stored in vacuum packaging and kept cool to preserve freshness.

Unpasteurized. Keep cool (Refrigerate if possible).

They gave 10 men and women a single meal containing zero, one, four, or 8 Brazil nuts, and found that the ingestion of just that single serving almost immediately improved cholesterol levels.

Certified Organic from Italy.

The sprouting rate for these seems to be about 80% to 90%, which is excellent.

Current scientific research all points to the benefits of eating leafy green vegetables, which in part is due to the tremendous health benefits of Sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is highest in broccoli sprouts; eating a cup of broccoli sprouts will provide the same amount of Sulforaphane of about 25 cups of mature broccoli. 2 tablespoons of seeds will provide you about 8 cups of sprouts (after ~ 5days), that's equivalent to eating about 200 cups of broccoli.

According to one study, Sulforaphane content is highest at around 48h to 72h (soaking time excluded). The sprouts will look tiny at this stage. If you want to put the sprouts in salads, you probably want to wait for 4 to 5 days. We use mason jars plus mesh netting. 2 tablespoons of seeds per jar.

These groats can be steam-cooked like rice for salads and side dishes or ground in your own mill into fresh flour. *Using a newly invented process, our supplier was able to create a cacao powder with a minimum 28% fat! Normal cacao powder has a fat content between 10-13%.

Made from cacao beans from a few different regions in Peru, like San Martin, but predominantly from a variety in the Cuzco region called Chuncho. Chuncho cacao is the cacao varietal that the Incan and Pre-Incan civilizations used. This cacao varietal grows natively in the highlands of the Cuzco Andes at around 1400meters above sea level. No other cacao grows at such a high altitude, enabling it to produce one of the purest, most complex and concentrated phytochemical and flavor profiles, which is also richer in cacao butter. Domesticated by the Machiguenga people, ancestral inhabitants of this region, the cacao is fermented in its native habitat within wooden boxes. Chuncho cacao is prized for its very low astringency, and flavour profile of red fruits and floral notes. This Cacao powder will be low in cadmium (<0.8ppm).

The raw cacao beans are fermented, gently heated to bring out the fine flavours, dried and milled, and then hydraulically pressed to seperate the fat content. Cacao is naturally high in several minerals, especially manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc. In addition to minerals, cocoa also contains some caffeine and theobromine. Also known as Raw Cocoa Powder.

Contains 28-31% cocoa butter.

The small red Camu berry is respected worldwide as “nature’s vitamin pill.” Containing a higher naturally occurring vitamin C content than any other food on the planet, Camu has long been used for its nutritional and medicinal attributes. Freeze-dried to protect the nutrient potential of this extraordinary berry.

The natural colour of the pulp of camu camu is pinkish. and this has higher vitamin C content and tastes much better than the rest of the fruit. Regular camu camu powder is made from the entire fruit (skin, pulp, and also seeds). When you make powder in the regular processing, it gets ground up and dried. The colour is brownish due to the other parts of the camu camu fruit, which has more fiber (the seeds especially), as well as exposure to oxygen and length of processing.

It takes 25 lb Wild-Crafted Camu berries to make 1lb Powder.

Recommendations: Stir 1 tsp or more to water, juice, smoothie or yogurt with a spoon or blender. Does not require refrigeration.

Certified Organic Cassava Flour from Brazil.

Cassava is a tuber crop and is similar in shape to a sweet potato. Cassava grows in many countries and is a staple in the diet of around 800 million people worldwide.

Manufacturers make cassava flour as follows:

  1. They grate the cassava into small pieces.
  2. Next, they dry out the grated cassava.
  3. Finally, they grind the dry, grated cassava until it forms a very fine powder.

Cassava flour features in a number of recipes. As cassava flour is gluten-free, people who avoid gluten can use it as a replacement for wheat flour in a variety of recipes. Many people consider it the most similar gluten-free alternative to wheat flour in terms of taste and texture.

Cassava flour versus tapioca flour
Cassava flour and tapioca flour both come from the cassava root. However, there are some key difference between the two:

  • The part of the plant they come from: Cassava flour contains the whole root, while tapioca flour is made up only of the starchy part of the root.
  • Fiber content: Cassava flour contains more dietary fiber than tapioca flour.
  • Calories: Cassava flour has fewer calories per serving than tapioca flour.
  • Their use in recipes: Both flours work similarly in recipes. However, due to the higher fiber content of cassava flour, it can be more effective as a thickener.
  • Their taste: Cassava flour has a more noticeable taste — it has a nuttier flavor in comparison to more plain-tasting tapioca flour.Uses

Here are some of the ways a person can use cassava flour:

  • In baking: To replace wheat flour in a number of recipes, including:
    • bread
    • muffins
    • cookies
    • cakes
    • brownies
  • In pasta: To make pasta dough.
  • Thickening: To help thicken a sauce, gravy, or pie filling.
  • Farofa: This is a Brazilian dish that involves toasted cassava flour and is similar to couscous.
  • Flatbreads: Cassava flour is great for making flatbreads and tortillas that a person could toast or grill.

Cassava flour does absorb more liquid than wheat flour. Therefore, a person may need to use slightly less cassava flour than they would use regular wheat flour in a recipe.

Benefits of Cassava flour

Cassava flour contains carbohydrates, which are the main energy source for the body.

Cassava flour also contains resistant starch. These are starches that the small intestine does not digest.

Resistant starches work in a similar manner to dietary fiber. They pass from the small intestines into the colon where they begin to ferment.

Resistant starches promote gut health by fedding the beneficial gut bacteria as they ferment.

There are a number of possible health benefits to eating resistant starches in cassava flour, including:

Digestive and colon health

As the resistant starch in cassava flour ferments inside the colon, it feeds the healthy bacteria there. During this process, the starches turn into short-chain fatty acids.

One of these short-chain fatty acids is butyrate. Butyrate is an important component in the cells of the colon.

Butyrate can also reduce the levels of inflammation inside the colon. This can help protect a person against a variety of digestive issues, such as inflammatory colorectal cancer and ulcerative colitis.

Insulin sensitivity

One 2012 study showed that resistant starch can increase a person’s insulin sensitivity. Cassava flour is high in resistant starch.

During the study, males who were overweight or had obesity ate 15–30 grams (g) of resistant starch each day. These males then showed increased insulin sensitivity in comparison to males who did not eat these resistant starches.

By increasing a person’s insulin sensitivity, resistant starches can play a role in preventing disorders such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

During the study, female participants did not show the same results. More research is necessary to determine why.

Cat's Claw Bark Powder (uncaria tomentosa) is one of the medicinal herbs from the Amazon rainforest and other South and Central America. This ancient plant enjoys a long history of yielding curative properties for joint disorders, treating viral infections, and improving immune function. Some indigenous tribes of South America even consider cat’s claw a sacred plant with spiritual significance. It was used to eliminate disturbances between the spirit and the body that were thought to be the reason for physical ailments. So, while there are many historical claims and anecdotal evidence to back cat’s claw’s potency, what does scientific information have to say about this rainforest vine? Let’s find out in our detailed cat’s claw review.

What is Cat’s Claw? The botanical name for cat’s claw is Uncaria. Uncaria has two prominent species, uncaria tomentosa and uncaria guianensis. Both herbs have different chemical structures with varying active compounds. And thus, they present different medicinal and therapeutic effects. Of the two, cat’s claw (uncaria tomentosa) is the better-researched species and seems to offer more health benefits than uncaria guianensis. The plant gets its name as its thorns resemble a cat’s claws. The outer bark of the plant has long fissures, whereas the inner bark has fibers. Inside, there is a watery sap possessing an astringent taste. The plant’s bark and root are where its therapeutic effects come from, and it gets processed into commercial preparations.

Main compounds  Cat’s claw contains several compounds, including the following: Alkaloids are naturally occurring constituents that have excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Proanthocyanidins are polyphenols that may help fight against cancer and possess anti-aging potential. H2 is another polyphenol that seems to work on reducing brain plaque, as seen in animal models. Glycosides are organic compounds of plant origins that possess anticancer and antitumor properties along with other biological effects. Tannins are phenolic compounds that may prevent diseases by providing antimicrobial and antioxidant benefits. Flavonoids are phytonutrients that help regulate cellular activity and fight off free radicals, causing oxidative stress on the body.

How Does Cat’s Claw Extract Work In The Brain? Cat’s claw may boost memory, learning, and mood. It offers a few different mechanisms that can help promote cognitive skills and improve overall brain health.

Mechanisms of Action Researchers claim that Uncaria Tomentosa increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor while controlling N-methyl-D-aspartate activity and shielding DNA content through its inflammation-fighting effects. Now, those are a lot of acronyms in one sentence, so let’s look at what they mean first. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor that promotes the survival of nerve cells by assisting their growth, maturation, and maintenance. N-methyl-D-aspartate is an amino acid. Overstimulation of NMDA receptors in the brain is involved in various mental health illnesses involving memory deficits like Alzheimer’s disease. Administering cat’s claw root for its brain-boosting effects shows that oral supplementation can potentially improve short-term memory, verbal, recall, and executive functions.

Works As Neuroprotectant Cat’s claw extracts also offer neuroprotective properties as it contains antioxidants to protect the brain from free radicals that may otherwise cause cell death. Because it can preserve DNA integrity and inhibit plaque formation in the brain, it goes a long way to care for brain health. What Are The Health Benefits of Cat’s Claw? Cat’s claw contains the right blend of anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Also, some research indicates that this healing root has immune-modulating mechanisms that can revive and bolster an impaired immune system.

Based on these promising health benefits, cat’s claw extracts can do the following:

Improves Memory and Cognitive Performance Cat’s claw is considered a nootropic as it creates a synergy in the brain that reduces inflammation, promotes antioxidant activity, and corrects damage caused by free radicals. Together, these processes can lower the incidence of depression while bolstering focus, cognition, and information processing. Various clinical trials on cat’s claw extracts and the brain show it to cause an inhibition of beta-amyloid plaque formation. It dissolves these plaques that would otherwise affect memory.

Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory (Neuroprotection) Cat’s claw possesses antioxidants and the ability to fight inflammation. The antioxidants work to ward off damage caused by free radicals, while inflammation can cause depression and dementia. In a neuroprotective capacity, the bark may help reduce the formation of plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Plus, its ability to repair DNA in the brain makes it a stellar neuroprotective agent. It can help reduce inflammation in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis pain and stiffness, and these effects extend to the brain and neural network.

Boosts The Immune System Cat’s claw may also stimulate the immune system as part of its health benefits. Animal and human studies seem to validate this, with one study indicating an increase in white blood cell count. White blood cells are part of the body’s immune system, helping the body fight infections and other diseases. When study participants received 700 mg of cat’s claw daily for two months before being vaccinated for pneumonia, there was an increase in their white blood cell count. Another study with animal models investigating how cat’s claw may stimulate the immune system presented similar findings after subjects received cat’s claw extract for six weeks.

Relieves Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis This South American vine has perhaps received the most significant attention in treating health issues like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Given its history of treating inflammatory diseases by the tribal people of South America, the practice carried over and is considered a non-pharmacological way of improving rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis symptoms. A few preliminary studies have investigated the effects of using cat’s claw for both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Studies have looked at one of its compounds called pentacyclic oxindole alkaloid that possesses the potential to fight inflammation. For osteoarthritis, taking a daily dose of 100 mg for four weeks showed better pain relief and overall symptom improvement than the people taking a placebo. For rheumatoid arthritis, researchers administered 20 mg supplements 3 times a day for 24 weeks. Findings showed people taking cat’s claw extract to present a more significant reduction in pain than their placebo counterparts.

Helps With Treatment of Lyme Disease Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that spreads through the bite of black-legged ticks. The condition triggers an initial rash that can then cause other varying symptoms of the disorder. Considered a possible treatment for the infection, a supplement with cat’s claw may help with symptom management of Lyme disease. One study recruited people with a confirmed diagnosis and a history of the infection for 10 years with progressive symptom deterioration. Participants received cat’s claw supplementation while reducing or discontinuing other pharmaceutical use. At the end of the 26-week trial period, people using the extract reported greater improvements in managing symptoms such as joint and muscle pain, headaches, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and digestive distress.

Has Anti Cancer Properties Preliminary test-tube studies suggest that the pentacyclic oxindole alkaloid content in uncaria tomentosa may have some anti-tumor potential. Research indicates that pentacyclic oxindole alkaloid may be toxic to specific types of cancer cells. One earlier, in vivo study suggested that cat’s claw may prevent the growth of cancerous cells in breast cancer patients by having an anti-mutagenic and anti-proliferative effect on cancerous cells. Another study investigated the effects of the bark on leukemia. Four of the alkaloids found in this healing vine demonstrated the ability to restrict leukemia cell proliferation. Two of the alkaloids, namely uncarine F and pteropodine, were found most effective in inhibiting leukemia cell growth. They also induced affected cells to sustain apoptosis or programmed cell death. Another more recent study indicated that using cat’s claw extract for people with advanced cancer may help their quality of life and lower cancer-related fatigue (CRF). On another note, taking cat’s claw may also help with DNA repair often caused by chemotherapy damage and cancer drugs. One earlier 2001 study examined the effects of cat’s claw extract on people receiving chemotherapy treatment. Uncaria Tomentosa extract was administered for 8 weeks, showing a reduction in DNA damage to affected cells. Also, people receiving cat’s claw supplements exhibited an increase in white blood cell count generation. This finding is significant as chemotherapy typically lowers white blood cell counts, increasing the risk of infection. All this information shows promising evidence regarding cancer treatment, but they are still few and far between. More research is still needed to use safely and effectively use the bark for treating cancer.

Lowers Blood Pressure Cat’s claw is considered a treatment for lowering blood pressure in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Another variety of cat’s claw called Uncaria Rhynchophylla prevents platelet aggregation and blood clotting. With a mechanism similar to blood thinners, it can help lower blood pressure and improve circulation. This supplement may also prevent plaque and arterial blood clot formation. Alkaloids are known as hirsutines in cat’s claw, act as calcium channel blockers, blocking calcium from permeating the walls of the heart and blood vessels. The same can also widen and relax blood vessels, allowing this activity to promote blood flow healthily.

How To Take Cat’s Claw Traditional uses of cat’s claw included boiling the root or bark for an hour or so and drinking it up as a concoction. To overcome the intense flavor, you have the option of mixing in some honey to make it more palatable.

Dosage: There are no recommended dosage guidelines for using cat’s claw, and any recommendations typically come from the manufacturer. 500mg - 1000mg daily should be a reasonable dose based on research results. Or 1tsp, 1 to 2 times per day.

How long does it take for Cat’s Claw to work? Cat’s claw is one of those nootropics that take a bit of time to show effects. Some studies indicate it takes up to eight weeks for cat’s claw to yield its full effects. Some others show that managing symptoms of conditions like knee pain, for instance, may provide relief within a week of starting supplementation. What Are The Side Effects of Cat’s Claw? Many of the evidence gathered for the benefits of cat’s claw comes from test-tube studies, small-scale clinical trials or case reports, and research is done on animals. In this sense, a lot more information is still required to treat severe health problems. However, most of the published clinical trials have ranged from four weeks to a year-long with significantly few side effects. Evidence shows the most common complaints to be symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, or an upset stomach. This probably happens because cat’s claw possesses a fair amount of tannins and only occurs when the extract is consumed in quantities exceeding the recommended dosage amounts. People with certain health conditions should not use cat’s claw supplements. This includes anyone with an autoimmune disease, blood pressure concerns, stomach ulcers, leukemia, or kidney problems. The herb can slow blood clotting, so people with bleeding disorders or others using anticoagulants should not take a cat’s claw supplement. Anyone scheduled for surgery should also stop taking cat’s claw two weeks before their surgery date. The herb can present drug interactions, so people using certain medications should not use cat’s claw. Common drug interactions include medicines for high blood pressure and immune-modulating drugs. You should also talk to your doctor first if you have any ongoing health condition, illness, or diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease.

Conclusion Cat’s claw is one of the best natural treatments for boosting immunity, fighting infections, treating arthritis, and lowering blood pressure. It is a time-honored remedy with minor side effects unless you have health issues that conflict with its use. After looking at the strengths and limitations of this South American vine, we feel that it has a lot to offer in diverse areas of healing. So, if you don’t have medical conditions that require taking medications, we would recommend it to be a supplement worth trying out.

FAQs Can you take cat’s claw every day? Cat’s claw is safe to take every day as long as you don’t have any of the specific health conditions mentioned above. You should also not take supplements if you are taking certain medications for your conditions.

Is cat’s claw antiviral? Cat’s claw possesses antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial features as it has been used successfully to treat infections like Lyme disease.

Does cat’s claw help you sleep? Cat’s claw is not a sleep aid per se, but it does ward off fatigue. This mechanism can make it easier for you to fall asleep and get a good rest.

Is cat’s claw good for anxiety? Cat’s claw can boost tryptophan levels which increases serotonin and may yield a calming effect.

Certified Organic Chickpeas from Turkey.

Like other legumes, such as lentils, chickpeas are rich in fiber and protein. They also contain several key vitamins and minerals. They can be a healthful addition to a balanced diet. The most common type of Chickpeas, or garbanzo beans has a round shape and a beige color, but other varieties are black, green, or red.

Chickpeas contain a range of nutrients, including protein, which is necessary for bone, muscle, and skin health. For people who do not eat meat or who are cutting down on meat consumption, a dish of chickpeas and rice, for example, can contribute a significant amount of protein to the diet. A cup of chickpeas provides almost one-third of an adult’s daily protein needs.

Certified Organic from Egypt.

This common herb is capable of mobilizing mercury, cadmium, lead and aluminum in both bones and the central nervous system. It is probably the only effective agent in mobilizing mercury stored in the inracellular space (attached to mitochondria, tubulin, liposomes etc) and in the nucleus of the cell (reversing DNA damage of mercury). Because cilantro mobilizes more toxins then it can carry out of the body, it may flood the connective tissue (where the nerves reside) with metals, that were previously stored in safer hiding places. This process is called re- toxification. It can easily be avoided by simultaneously giving an intestinal toxin-absorbing agent. Our definite choice is the algal organism chlorella. A recent animal study demonstrated rapid removal of aluminum from the skeleton superior to any known other detox agent.

Dosage and application:  Make tea with 1 Tbsp of dried cilantro, 2 times /day in the beginning; drink tea just before a meal OR 30 minutes after taking Chlorella.

Gradually increase dose to 3 Tbsp, 3 times/day, for full benefit. During the initial phase of the detox cilantro should be given 1 week on, 2 –3 weeks off.

*1 Tbsp dried = 4 Tbsp fresh.

(cilantro causes the gallbadder to dump bile - containing the excreted neurotoxins - into the small intestine. The bile -release occurs naturally as we are eating and is much enhanced by cilantro. If no chlorella is taken, most neurotoxins are reabsorbed on the way down the small intestine by the abundant nerve endings of the enteric nervous system).

Proven Health Benefits of Dates

Very Nutritious
Dates have an excellent nutrition profile.

Most of the calories in dates come from carbs. The rest are from a very small amount of protein. Despite their calories, dates contain some important vitamins and minerals in addition to a significant amount of fiber.

A 3.5-ounce (100-gram) serving provides the following nutrients:

• Calories: 277

• Carbs: 75 grams

• Fiber: 7 grams

• Protein: 2 grams

• Potassium: 20% of the RDI

• Magnesium: 14% of the RDI

• Copper: 18% of the RDI

• Manganese: 15% of the RDI

• Iron: 5% of the RDI

• Vitamin B6: 12% of the RDI

Dates are also high in antioxidants, which may contribute to many of their health benefits.

High in Fiber
With almost 7 grams of fiber in a 3.5-ounce serving, including dates in your diet is a great way to increase your fiber intake.

Fiber can benefit your digestive health by preventing constipation. It promotes regular bowel movements by contributing to the formation of stool.

In one study, 21 people who consumed 7 dates per day for 21 days experienced improvements in stool frequency and had a significant increase in bowel movements compared to when they did not eat dates.

Furthermore, the fiber in dates may be beneficial for blood sugar control. Fiber slows digestion and may help prevent blood sugar levels from spiking too high after eating. For this reason, dates have a low glycemic index (GI), which measures how quickly your blood sugar rises after eating a certain food.

High in Antioxidants
Antioxidants protect your cells from free radicals, which are unstable molecules that may cause harmful reactions in your body and lead to disease.

Compared to similar types of fruit, such as figs and dried plums, dates appear to have the highest antioxidant content.

Here’s an overview of the three most potent antioxidants in dates:

• Flavonoids: Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation and have been studied for their potential to reduce the risk of diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and certain types of cancer.

• Carotenoids: Carotenoids are proven to promote heart health and may also reduce the risk of eye-related disorders, such as macular degeneration.

• Phenolic acid: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, phenolic acid may help lower the risk of cancer and heart disease.

May Promote Brain Health
Laboratory studies have found dates to be helpful for lowering inflammatory markers, such as interleukin 6 (IL-6), in the brain. High levels of IL-6 are associated with a higher risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Additionally, animal studies have shown dates to be helpful for reducing the activity of amyloid beta proteins, which can form plaques in the brain.

When plaques accumulate in the brain, they may disturb communication between brain cells, which can ultimately lead to brain cell death and Alzheimer’s disease.

One animal study found that mice fed food mixed with dates had significantly better memory and learning ability, as well as less anxiety-related behaviors, compared to those that did not eat them.

The potential brain-boosting properties of dates have been attributed to their content of antioxidants known to reduce inflammation, including flavonoids.

May Promote Natural Labor
Eating these fruits throughout the last few weeks of pregnancy may promote cervical dilation and lower the need for induced labor. They may also be helpful for reducing labor time.

In one study, 69 women who consumed 6 dates per day for 4 weeks prior to their due date were 20% more likely to go into labor naturally and were in labor for significantly less time than those who did not eat them.

Another study of 154 pregnant women found that those who ate dates were much less likely to be induced compared to those who did not.

A third study found similar results in 91 pregnant women who consumed 70–76 grams of dates daily starting the 37th week of pregnancy. They were in active labor for an average of 4 fewer hours than those who did not eat dates.

The role dates may have in pregnancy is likely due to compounds that bind to oxytocin receptors and appear to mimic the effects of oxytocin in the body. Oxytocin is a hormone that causes labor contractions during childbirth.

Additionally, dates contain tannins, which are compounds that have been shown to help facilitate contractions. They are also a good source of natural sugar and calories, which are necessary to maintain energy levels during labor.

Excellent Natural Sweetener
Dates are a source of fructose, which is a natural type of sugar found in fruit.

For this reason, dates are very sweet and also have a subtle caramel-like taste. They make a great sugar substitute in recipes due to the nutrients, fiber and antioxidants that they provide.

The best way to substitute dates for sugar is to make date paste by mixing dates with water in a blender. A rule of thumb is to replace sugar with date paste at a 1:1 ratio.

Other Potential Health Benefits
Dates have been claimed to have a few other health benefits that have not yet been extensively studied.

• Bone health: Dates contain several minerals, including phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. All of these have been studied for their potential to prevent bone-related conditions like osteoporosis.

• Blood sugar control: Dates have the potential to help due to their low glycemic index, fiber and antioxidants. Thus, eating them may benefit diabetes management.

Flax seed is: gluten free, high in omega-3 and fiber, and tastes great.

Flax (Linum usitatissimum) is a beautiful blue flowered plant grown on the plains of Central Canada and the North Central United States. Modern research has taken great interest in flaxseed with study after study confirming that the oil and fiber components of flaxseed have wonderful health benefits.

  • Flaxseed has a high ratio of Linolenic (Omega-3) to Linoleic (omega-6) fatty acids. While many other plant seeds contain a higher ratio of omega-6 fats, flaxseed is the one of the few seeds that contains a much higher ratio of the essential omega-3 fats.
  • Flaxseed oil is one of the richest sources of OMEGA-3 fatty acid, Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) an ESSENTIAL FATTY ACID (EFA). This fatty acid is considered essential, meaning that your body cannot make it but requires it and so must derive all of it from the diet. The average American diet is lacking in this fat. Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. One serving of Organic Whole Flaxseed provides 9 grms of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Flaxseed is unique in that 48% of its total fat content is omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Flaxseed contains very high amounts of DIETARY FIBER, both SOLUBLE and INSOLUBLE. Flaxseed is 28%-35% fiber, 1/3 of which is soluble, and the other 2/3 insoluble. Soluble fiber also plays an important role in maintaining the “good bacteria” in our bowel, like Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidobacteria. Insoluble fiber increases the bulk of stools.
  • Flaxseed is an outstanding source of many essential nutrients, including: proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, folate, vitamin B-6, pantothenic acid, magnesium, potassium, iron, thiamine, copper, zinc, calcium and phosphorus.

PREPARATION & USE OF FLAXSEED
Flaxseed must be finely cut into a meal to get maximum benefits of the OMEGA-3 oil and dietary fiber. We recommend that you buy a coffee grinder and dedicate its use to grinding flax seeds. Once ground, the flaxseeds should be consumed quickly, as the oil inside the seeds oxidizes rapidly.

The recommended daily amount of flaxseeds to eat is about 1–2 Tbsp. The most beneficial amount for maximum nutritional value of ground flaxseed is 2 tablespoons daily. It can be mixed into 10–12 oz. of juice or water. Make sure you use plenty of water when adding flaxseed to your diet. Ground flaxseed can easily be added on top of dishes including: baked products, stir-fry dishes, soup or stews, cereal and yogurt.

Flaxseed is 35–40% oil so a similar amount may be omitted from any recipe requiring oil that also includes ground flaxseed. Similarly, about 1 Tbsp. of ground flaxseed steeped in 3 Tbsp. of water for 2-3 minutes will substitute for one egg in recipes.

Certified Organic herbs from India, USA and Europe.

Ingredients: Slippery Elm, Licorice Root and Marshmallow Root.

“If we can create a more suitable intestinal environment for more beneficial bacteria, and repopulate the gut with colonizing probiotics that will rebuild a healthy microbiome, this is a great step towards digestive health and self-sufficiency without taking lifelong probiotics.” Excerpt From: Douillard, John. “Eat Wheat: A Scientific and Clinically-Proven Approach to Safely Bringing Wheat and Dairy Back Into Your Diet."

The following is a 2-step comprehensive plan for restoring gut health:
1. Support intestinal mucus membranes by bringing your elimination back into balance with this soluble-fiber tea made from a slippery elm, licorice root, and marshmallow root mixture to create the best possible environment for healthy microbes to thrive.
2. Introduce healthy, colonizing probiotics (Gutpro/MegaSpore) for a few months—instead of the rest of your life with transient probiotics—to help establish new beneficial, permanent bacterial residents to proliferate in your gut and enhance your health and digestion.

Directions:
1. Soak 3 or 4 tablespoons of the pre-mixed herbs in 2 quarts of water overnight.  (Soaking overnight is not mandatory, but it gives you a stronger decoction.)
3. Boil the mixture down to 1/2 quart in the morning.
4. Strain the mixture through a metal strainer, using a large spoon to push it through.
5. Save the liquid and discard the herbs. (This should make 2 cups).
6. Take 1 tablespoon of the liquid every 2 hours on an empty stomach for 1 month, and sometimes for 2 months if needed.

Note: If there is an overgrowth of undesirable bacteria in the small and large intestines, There is clinical success adding a beneficial yeast called Saccharomyces Boulardii, which has been shown to knock out undesirable yeast and bacteria in the digestive tract.

These fats stimulate the body’s natural thermogenic system which actually burns fat. The Essential Fatty Acids in Hemp also help muscle recovery and growth.
  • Easy To Digest & Non-Allergenic: Hemp does not contain gluten and is free of the enzyme inhibitor found in soy and other legumes and grains which prevent protein absorption and typically cause gas, bloating and other digestion problems. In addition, there are no known allergies to hemp.

French lentils are a variety of green lentils. What sets them apart from standard green lentils is their slightly darker hue and smaller size. They’re about one third the size of standard green lentils. They are special because they hold their shape better than pretty much any other type of lentils, so they are the ideal contender for salads as well as light soups, when you’d rather the lentils in the pot not turn to mush. Their flavor is also slightly different than other types; it’s a bit nutty and peppery, with a slight mineral-like, earthy flavor.

These lentils are grown in beautiful British Columbia on healthy organic soils. It is part of Fieldstone Granary's coordinated Organic Producer plan, where crops are grown within one degree of separation, according to the high standards of the Canadian Organic Regime. This way Fieldstone can assure a high level of purity and integrity of the grain.

Storage: Store lentils in an airtight container in a cool, dry and dark place, for up to 12 months. Cooked lentils will keep fresh in the refrigerator for about three days if placed in a covered container.

Certified Organic from Kenya.

*These are the highest grade: 50:50 half & whole.

Our producer became a practicer in sustainability itself: organic is as natural for the market leader of macadamia nuts as social commitment, fair trade and value creation in Kenya. Macadamias have been grown in Kenya for generations. However, not on plantations, but in ecological agroforestry systems! The trees grow there on small plots of land between other fruit and vegetable varieties. They provide each other with shade and keep pests at bay, and at the same time the falling leaves ensure humus-rich soil.

These macadamia nuts taste great due to a unique process where they are dried at low temperature and shelled without the use of water which would cause off flavours. This insures quality and enhances sweetness and shelf life. Every single nut is cracked and sorted by hand. This ensures job opportunities as well as produces the most whole and cleanest (no shell bits/dust) kernels.

*It is difficult to over-eat Macadamia nuts as their enzymes “signal” to the brain to stop eating. People experience this phenomena as: munching with full appetite and noticing that they taste “different”.

Organic Nattokinase Powder

Nattokinase is a proteolytic enzyme that naturally occurs in natto. It is a traditional fermented soybean dish and a well-known staple food in Japan. Natto is fairly easy to make since it only requires water, straw and soybeans. The straw that has the bacterium called bacillus subtilis natto will be mixed with the freshly steamed soybean and water. After that, it will be set for fermentation. During fermentation, natto develops its mild taste and it has a very strong odor like that of blue cheese.

In the year 1980, Dr. Hiroyuki Sumi was looking for a food that can effectively break up blood clots like those that can cause cardiac arrest and stroke. He discovered that natto can dissolve fibrin which is the type of protein that builds up in blood clots. In his laboratory experiment, he discovered that natto has the ability to completely dissolve fibrin clots after almost about 18 hours. Nattokinase works similarly like blood-thinning agent coumadin. People who have had vascular injury or those people who are in risk of elevated fibrinogen level formation can benefit from the fibrin-digesting effects of nattokinase. It also reduces the thickening of the arteries and helps to heal damaged blood vessels. Nattokinase breaks down fibrin/proteins in mucus and biofilms. It has been used to treat the following: heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, chest pain, deep vein thrombosis, atherosclerosis, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, poor circulation, and peripheral artery disease. It is also used for pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, muscle spasms, infertility, cancer, and beriberi.

The appropriate dose of Nattokinase depends on age, health and other conditions. Do not exceed 200mg/day unless under the care of a health practitioner. *Do not take nattokinase with other anticoagulant or anti-clotting medication such as aspirin, clopidogrel, diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen, dalteparin, enoxapar, heparin, warfarin, and others. *Do not take nattokinase if you are pregnant, breast feeding, have a bleeding or coagula.

Dosage: 100mg (1/16 tsp) once or twice a day. Preferrably on an empty stomach.

neem oil

Wild-Crafted Neem Oil from India

*This Neem Oil is a few years old so should only be used as a pesticide and not for human consumption.

Neem is the most important non-chemical pesticide for organic farming and gardens.

This is premium Neem oil. Wild-crafted, cold pressed from carefully stored seeds* of the Neem tree. This oil is perfect for skin care, animal care & herbal use or as an agricultural spray. It is rich in all the liminoids and compounds that have earned Neem oil it's title as A Tree For Solving Global Problems. The oil is guaranteed free of aflatoxin* which is a fungus that can grow on poorly cleaned or stored seeds. It has a strong garlic/nutty aroma - unpleasant to some but loved by those who have experienced it's healing and protective powers.

NOTE-Neem Oil is mainly composed of glycerides of palmitin, stearin, and linolic acids. Neem Oil is similar to Palm Oil. Both oils deposit stearin at low temperatures and especially after they solidify. This process is repeated with each cycle of freezing and thawing. Neem Oil has a high wax content and therefore clouds at 16 C (60.8 F) and tends to solidify at 12 C (53.6 F). At temperatures below 5 C (41 F), Neem Oil is solid and on thawing will deposit stearin. This can be filtered out if needed. It is also normal to find creamy globules of fatty acid deposits in Neem Oil stored at room temperature. These will melt on thawing.

Azadirachtin, a major component of neem oil, is rapidly broken down. Microbes and light break down the pesticide in soil, water and on plants. The half-life of azadirachtin in soil ranges from 3-44 days. In water, the half-life ranges from 48 minutes to 4 days. It also rapidly breaks down on plant leaves; the half-life is 1-2.5 days. The remaining components of neem oil are broken down by microbes in most soil and water environments.

This Neem Oil is independently verified to be free of any pesticides or harmful levels of any metals.

Nigella Black Cumin Seeds

Certified Organic from India.

When it comes to versatility and the power of its health benefits, Nigella seeds (also called black cumin) stand above other botanicals.

A Long History of Therapeutic Use; The black seed of nigella sativa (black cumin seed) has been used for over three thousand years for preventing and treating many different diseases. In ancient texts and historical documents black cumin seed is noted for its therapeutic attributes and ability to support the body in its own natural healing processes. Archeological studies report that black cumin seed seeds have been found in several sites from ancient Egypt, including in the tomb of Tutankhamun. It has been revered as a beauty secret since ancient times as Queen Nefertiti, renowned for her complexion, was, a reportedly a devoted black cumin seed user. Ibri Sina, the Persian physician and philosopher, discussed black cumin seed in the text Canon of Medicine, considered a hallmark publication in the history of human medicine and used as the primary medical text throughout Europe until the 17th century. In it he states that black cumin seed has preventive and restorative features as it “stimulates the body’s energy and helps in recovery from fatigue and dispiritedness.”

What conditions can black cumin seed help address?

  • Cancer. Black cumin seed has potent anti-oxidant properties and these are thought to be behind the cancer prevention properties demonstrated in animal studies. In vitro and animal studies also show inhibition and reduction of tumor growth in various types of cancer including blood, breast, colon, pancreatic, liver, lung, skin, kidney, prostate and cervix. There are also demonstrated benefits as an adjunctive to chemotherapy in humans—for instance, black cumin seed shows a potential ability to decrease the incidence of side effects in children with brain tumors who are on chemotherapy. Its active component, thymoquinone, sensitizes brain cancer cells to chemotherapy, making treatment more effective.
  • Heart Disease and Diabetes. Black cumin seed favorably affects several parameters related to heart disease riskincluding lowering total and LDL cholesterol, reducing inflammation, lowering blood pressure, reducing plaque formation. It also reduces blood glucose, as well as diabetic-associated complications such as neuropathy.
  • Infections. Black cumin seed is a potent antimicrobial with the ability to fight bacteria, parasites, fungi and even viruses. It has demonstrated activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the strain of bacteria that is difficult to treat and resistant to antibiotics. Black cumin seed even reduces viral load and improves other markers in patients with hepatitis C.
  • Neurological Conditions. Black cumin seed has been shown in in vitro and animal studies to be protective of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, depression, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injury. Learning and memory is also improved in animals given black cumin seed. Anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties are thought to be responsible for this effect.
  • Immune Disorders. Black cumin seed has been shown helpful in autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and rheumatoid arthritis, and also allergic asthma, sinusitis, and eczema. For a deeper dive into the application of black cumin seed for asthma and allergy, evidenced by several human studies, you’ll want to read our recent article by CDP colleagueSezelle Gereau, Functional otolaryngologist: Consider Nigella Sativa for Asthma and Allergy.
  • Pain. Black cumin seed oil, applied topically, is better than moderate dosing of oral acetaminophen (paracetamol) at reducing pain from knee osteoarthritis. Oral black cumin seed oil also has general analgesic effects, according to animal studies.
  • Weight Loss. Supplementation with N. sativa exerts a moderate effect on reduction in body weight, body mass index and waist circumference.

What Form to Take? Seed or Oil? And How Much?
In human clinical trials, dosages of 1-3 grams of black cumin seed powder has been used (orally) for up to 12 months. 2 months is recommended before checking on changes to cholesterol or blood glucose management. Black cumin seed oil is used orally at doses up to 5 mL or 40 mg per kg for up to 8 weeks for therapeutic effects. Topical use, for example for knee osteoarthritis, has included 1 mL applied locally three times per day.

Usually oats are heated, so they cannot sprout. These are also called Naked Oats and grow without hulls, so they aren't damaged or killed by de-hulling. Germination Rate: 85-90%.

These oats are grown in fields that are not used in crop rotations for wheat, barley, triticale, rye, or any related species (spelt, etc.) for at least 3 years, and the  majority of our fields have been dedicated gluten free for 10+ years.  All of our facilities and milling equipment are dedicated to gluten-free crops.   In addition to these rigorous standards, we test our oats for gluten contamination after harvest and again after milling.  We test our oats using an ELISA enzyme test which is approved for gluten-free food manufacturers.  Our oats consistently test negative for gluten – below the detectable level of 10 ppm.

Use for Oat Milk, Milling, or Rolled Oats. For fermented oats: soak for 1 day, dry, roll and have with your favourite Nut Milk.

Certified Organic Pinto Beans from Turkey.

Pinto beans are medium in size and when dry, they have a speckled beige and brown exterior. Interestingly, they transform in the pot and turn completely brown as they cook. Pinto beans were originally cultivated in Peru before they were spread throughout the Americas. Today, it’s the most popular bean in the United States and is particularly well known as the bean of choice for refried beans and burritos. But this certainly doesn’t limit you, the Turkish also enjoy them in this simple dish of pinto beans, dredged in olive oil. Pinto beans have a mild, nutty flavor and a velvety texture when cooked, so they readily take on the flavors you cook with.

How to cook: soak beans overnight, strain soaking water, boil on stove for up to 1.5 hrs.

Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic (formerly GutPro®

*(20g powder now comes with measuring spoon)

With this carefully formulated custom probiotic, you can help your most sensitive clients restore their gut ecology.

As many practitioners like you have discovered, some probiotic formulas can trigger reactions. But Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic is a game changer – as it’s created for the “the sensitive of the sensitive” and the “canary in the coal mine.”

Certain strains found in other commercial probiotic formulas that can cause acidosis, histamine and other adverse reactions are not present in Smidge®. This unparalleled, hypoallergenic formula can help “kick start” the digestive system, maximize the absorption of nutrients from a real food diet, and ultimately, support the entire immune system.*

Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic

A potent, condensed and pure probiotic with just the right blend of bacteria…

  • Contains eight clinically-proven strains of human probiotics (L. plantarum, L. gasseri, L. salivarius, B. bifidum, B. breve, B. infantis, B. longum, B. lactis).
  • Gives you 25+ billion CFUs per 1/32 teaspoon (a “smidgen” on our spoon set).
  • Is appropriate for people using diets including GAPS, SIBO, Body Ecology, Autism/PDD-NOS, PANDA/PANS, Paleo, AIP, Ketogenic, gluten-free, soy-free and casein-free (Please note: While GutPro® was designed based on feedback from these specific communities, we do not imply that it’s intended to treat a specific medical condition, nor do we imply it’s “compliant” with a specific diet).
  • Contains only histamine-neutral or histamine-degrading strains of probiotic bacteria.
  • Does not contain strains known to contribute to d-lactate acidosis.
  • Does not contain streptococcus thermophilus or other strains linked to irritation.
  • Does not contain any spore-forming strains of probiotics (e.g. soil bacteria).
  • Is free of inulin, maltodextrin and other prebiotics.
  • Is free of excipients and other added ingredients, i.e. magnesium stearate, silica, titanium dioxide.
  • Is free of common allergens. All strains are grown on a dairy-free, soy-free, vegetarian, non-GMO culture. Does not contain milk/casein, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat/gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, yeast, corn or soy.
  • Is easy to calibrate the right dose for your needs. A little goes a long way. Many of our customers only take 1/64  of a teaspoon daily (the “drop” on our spoon set)!
  • In other words, we intentionally avoided the strains your body is not ready to assimilate when you're out of balance. We picked the strains that work for you, not against you. We thought about you, every step of the way!

Dosage: Powder

Always start with a smidge! Use one Smidge® spoonful (20 mg). Take once a day, with food, or as directed by a certified healthcare practitioner. (See "low and slow" note below.)

*Product comes with a dosage spoon.

Start low and slow: Our supplements are premium, pure and potent. Therefore, it's critically important to start slowly, with a lower dosage than recommended. For example, a minimal dose every other day, or even once a week, until you can determine how the supplement affects your body and what feels right for you.

How to take: Use your dosage spoon to accurately measure your desired dose of probiotic powder. Sprinkle on lukewarm or cold food, mix it in a smoothie or take it with an organic fat, like butter, ghee, emu oil or coconut oil. See dosage instructions above for more info.

Dosage: Capsules

Adults: Always start with a smidge! Start with one capsule daily with food. Then take two capsules together, or as directed by a certified healthcare practitioner. (See "low and slow" note below).

Children: Take one capsule daily with food.

For sensitive adults and children: A smaller dose may be obtained by pulling apart the capsule and taking a portion of the contents.

Start low and slow: Our supplements are premium, pure and potent. Therefore, it's critically important to start slowly, with a lower dosage than recommended. For example, a minimal dose every other day, or even once a week, until you can determine how the supplement affects your body and what feels right for you.

How to take: For best absorption, we recommend taking your probiotic with a meal or a spoonful of organic fat, like butter, ghee, emu oil or coconut oil.

Great value for your money

Many people see the $125 price tag of the Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic and question the cost. But please keep in mind, because Smidge® is ultra premium, ultra clean and therefore, ultra concentrated, you only need a teeny, tiny amount per serving; and the bottle will last you a long time — roughly eight to 12 months, depending on dosage. When you consider the quality ingredients we use in our special formula as well as the dosing mentioned above, you will find that Smidge® is actually super cost-effective: At the standard dose, a one-month supply costs under $10. This is less than most store-bought probiotics and less than half the price of the mass produced "premium" brands.

Natural health practitioners are beginning to understand how important gut ecology is for health. The research on the microbiome is astounding – and we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg.

One thing we’re learning about probiotics is that not all strains are beneficial for everyone. People struggling with particular sensitivities can find that some probiotics bring more bad than good. Over the years, we’ve gathered feedback from practitioners, parents and people who are using a diet designed for GAPS, SIBO, Body Ecology, Autism/PDD-NOS, PANDA/PANS, Paleo, AIP, Ketogenic, gluten-free, soy-free or casein-free.

Based on what we’ve learned from these different groups, we developed a unique probiotic formula.

If you’re a practitioner looking for a probiotic that you can confidently recommend to clients who are working within these parameters, GutPro® Probiotic Powder is for you, as it avoids what we like to call probiotic “landmines”.*

Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic:

  • Gives you the diverse benefits of a synergistic blend of eight proven strains.
  • Avoids the strains that can sometimes cause problems.
  • Gives you just probiotics – nothing more. No prebiotics or fillers. No allergens. No hidden ingredients that can undermine the good you’re trying to achieve with a probiotic.
  •

We’ve had customers who have tried a dozen – sometimes as many as 20 – different probiotic formulas. And after years of frustration and despair, they’ve told us that Smidge® was the one that finally worked for them.

Here’s why . . .

Does not contain strains known to contribute to d-lactate acidosis

Lactobacillus acidophilus can work wonders in the gut by producing lactic acid. But for some of us, this can become a problem.

Lactate is a derivative of the lactic acid this strain produces. It comes in two isomeric forms, d-lactate and l-lactate.  Most of us have the capacity to metabolize both forms to some extent and turn it into pyruvic acid.

But for various reasons, some people can’t metabolize d-lactate effectively enough to keep up with the d-lactate produced by gut bacteria. As a result, the d-lactate can build up in your body and cause d-lactate acidosis.

If this has been an issue for you, you’ll love Smidge® Probiotic Powder. We’ve kept any probiotic strains associated with d-lactate acidosis out of our Smidge® formula.

Yes, we do include strains like Lactobacillus plantarum which can produce d-lactate under certain conditions. But here’s the thing . . .

This strain primarily produces l-lactate.  L. plantarum only produce d-lactate under certain conditions. Better yet, L. plantarum may even help with acidosis by helping the body maintain a lactate equilibrium. And unlike L. acidophilus, L. plantarum is transient. It doesn’t take up residence in your gut and shift the ecosystem that dramatically.

Because of the powerful health benefits associated with this strains, we decided to keep it in the formula. Based on our research and years of customer satisfaction, we’re confident it does not contribute to d-lactate acidosis.

Smidge® Powder can keep your body’s d-lactate in balance. But that’s not the only way this formula is designed for your clients…

No probiotics linked to histamine production

Many people have trouble with probiotics linked to histamine production like L. casei. Histamines are chemicals produced by the immune system that can trigger an immune response.

So we’ve made sure that the strains included in this formula are either histamine-neutral or histamine-degrading.

That means you won’t have to worry about increasing your exposure to histamines when you take this probiotic formula.

That’s not the only irritant we’ve kept out of this formula…

No spore-producing bacteria or streptococcus thermophilus

For people concerned about spore-producing Bacillus bacteria or Streptococcus thermophilus (e.g. soil strains), we’ve made sure to keep these strains out as well.

While the research is still ongoing about the impact these strains have on our systems, we believe that quite often, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. We decided to play it safe and keep this formula simple and easy on the most sensitive bodies.

Of course, it’s not just the probiotic strains you need to worry about.  Most probiotics supplements are only 10% to 20% probiotics and 80% to 90% something else.

Smidge’s custom probiotic powder is just probiotics – Nothing else!

  • There are no excipients or fillers like silica or magnesium stearate.
  • Nor are there any prebiotics like inulin or FOS.
  •

And, to make sure that this formula works for everyone – it’s free of common allergens! Every strain we use is grown on a dairy-free, soy-free, non-GMO vegetarian culture.

It does not contain milk/casein, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat/gluten, peanuts, tree nuts, yeast, corn or soy.

8 clinically-proven, beneficial strains

Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic gives you a super team of eight clinically-proven probiotic bacteria* . . .

Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus salivarius, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium infantis, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium lactis.

While we believe that no single strain in particular is the magic bullet for specific ailments and conditions – as strains should work together as they do in a healthy digestive system and the idea is to heal the overall gut first – the research on these eight strains is extensive… the potential health benefits enormous.*

All of these probiotic strains seem to play a role when it comes to comfortable, healthy digestion.*

For example . . .

  • No less than four clinical trials have shown that L. plantarum helps support comfortable digestion – helping to minimize gas, bloating, and abdominal pain.*
  • One of the first bacteria to colonize our bodies at birth, B. longum has been associated with helping to digest milk and other challenging foods. *
  • Bifidobacterium breve has been shown in a few clinical trials involving pre-term babies that this special bacteria works especially well in helping to establish a healthy colony of bacteria in the gut. *
  • Bifidobacterium lactis shows exciting promise in lab research to interfere with the body’s reaction to certain toxins from wheat.*
  • And a recent randomized placebo-controlled study also showed that B. bifidum can help with stress-related diarrhea.*
  •

These probiotics keep your immune system strong:

  • A 2015 clinical study published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed B. bifidum helped  academically stressed college students make it through the winter semester. The students who took B. bifidum had much fewer absences than the students who didn’t take the probiotic. *
  •

They regulate your immune system for a balanced immune response:

  • One of the most common probiotics, L. plantarum, seems to help regulate your immune response, reducing inflammation in the body.* Not only does L. plantarum stimulate the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-10, it also seems to stimulate the production of regulatory T-cells.*
  • Several clinical trials on both adults and children indicate that l. salivarius seems to help regulate the immune system and – as a result- support healthy skin.*

They keep inflammation in check:

  • Clinical research published in May, 2016 Journal of Rheumatic Diseases suggests that  B. bifidum can help you maintain comfortable joint movement by helping your body manage inflammation.*
  • Preliminary research on mice indicates that L. gasseri may inhibit inflammation signaling at the genetic level!*

Some help keep your mood buoyant and your brain sharp:

  • Preliminary studies indicate that L. plantarum may help you strengthen your memory, concentration and improve your mood.*
  • And research suggests B. infantis regulates the production of tryptophan which is the precursor for serotonin.* Serotonin is the neurotransmitter associated with a sense of satisfaction and happiness.

They may even help keep your teeth healthy and strong:

  • L. salivarius seems to help keep the microbial population in your mouth healthy.*

Help your clients feel great with Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic and a real foods diet.

As you well know from your practice, probiotics can’t work in a vacuum. They only amplify the healthy changes you’re helping your clients make to their diet and lifestyle. A junk food diet can’t be overcome with even the best probiotic formulation.

But when people invest time and energy into making healthy changes in their lives, this careful probiotic formulation helps them make the most of it.

By including this formula in the regimen, you can help your clients see the full benefits of making these changes. And you’ll never have to worry about undermining all this hard work with the wrong probiotic strains.

Finally, because it’s a concentrated mix of pure probiotics, a little goes a long way. Many of our customers take only 1/64 of a teaspoon each day (the “drop” on our spoon set).  You can work with your clients to calibrate it exactly to what they need.

What to expect when starting Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic

Smidge® Sensitive Probiotic is designed for comfort. We’ve eliminated the potential problems associated with other probiotic formulas.

Nonetheless, some people still experience a little discomfort in the initial weeks of starting with Smidge®. Like with all probiotics, as you rebalance your internal ecosystem, some of the bacteria that are pushed out may not leave gracefully.

As these unwanted bacteria “die off,” they can cause mild dizziness, nausea or headaches. This is a typical response to starting with probiotics.

While this kind of discomfort is normal, it shouldn’t be experienced over the long term. Within a few weeks, once a healthy microbial community is established and the body has cleaned out much of the toxins, these discomforts should end.

If this initial discomfort is too much, we suggest you advise your clients to decrease the amount of powder taken. And then slowly increase the amount. Some of our customers start with a tiny bit, or ⅛ of the “drop” on our spoon set (the “drop” is 1/64 of a teaspoon)! Even at this small amount, your clients will receive billions of well balanced CFUs.

Be assured that with Smidge®, we’ve removed the strains and other ingredients that can cause long-term problems.

Storage

Please keep the probiotics refrigerated and always capped for long-term storage. Do not remove the moisture packet inside the bottle.  Make sure the spoons are very clean and dry before using them with the powder for best results.

The freeze dried organisms have undergone independent laboratory analysis for verification of stated potency (in both it’s raw and finished form).  The probiotic was tested in a variety of conditions and temperatures and is both highly stable and potent in the time it takes to reach it’s destination and for two years from the date of it’s production.

As an extra measure, we routinely include a higher number of CFU’s (organisms) in each bottle than is stated on the label to account for any potential and minimal degradation that might occur during shipping delays in extreme heat.

Note: Freeze-dried organisms behave very differently than "live cultures" and are in a state of suspended animation.  This means the organisms are very stable and inactive until they come in contact with moisture.  Live cultures would perish quickly during shipping, freeze-dried bacteria do not.

The probiotic powders are sealed in a non-permeable amber glass bottle to protect the organisms against moisture during shipping and for extended use and storage.  During our regular 2 day expedited shipping, the product has shown no decline in activity even after the product arrived warm and sometimes, even hot.

What to do with the product once it arrives?  Simply store the bottle in the refrigerator.. Once the bottle has been opened, do not remove the moisture pillow inside in the bottle as this will help to protect the strains from moisture - which can compromise the probiotic.

Do be mindful to replace the cap and return the product to the refrigerator after each dose.   The probiotic can remain at full potency for up to two weeks in room temperature, unrefrigerated, but should be kept cold and dry for long term storage and to ensure full potency throughout it's use.

Here’s what one of our many happy customers has to say:

Best Probiotics

“I have tried more than a few brands and I always come back to Smidge®. The best analogy I can think of is that it's like comparing $400 shoes to $10 shoes. There is just a world of difference in comfort and quality. With a child with many food intolerances and allergies and another with PDD-NOS, it really helps me that this has no fillers and everyone in the family can take it together.”

- Valerie K.

Last but not least, according to the practitioners

“As a practitioner I have tried many probiotic supplements with my clients over the years but was always concerned about additives and fillers as well as the streptococcus and acidophilus strains which never seemed to agree with my more sensitive ASD/GAPS clients. So imagine my delight when I first came across Smidge® and my wish had come true – clean, pure, d-lactate free, no unnecessary strains, no fillers and a concentrated formula which can be used by the whole family and is the most cost effective probiotic I’ve been able to find. Many happy clients later I can highly recommend it!

- Kitsa Yanniotis

Certified GAPS Practitioner, Certified Body Ecologist, Creator Kitsa’s Kitchen

“We use Smidge® as our multi-strain probiotic of choice for the majority of our clients. With extensive clinical evidence we’ve found it to be gentle upon entry for building the beneficial flora in the gut as well as conducive to therapeutic titration.  Bottom line is it works! Even for those with the most sensitive or compromised systems.  And personally, it’s my favorite probiotic to support both my own and my family’s health.”

- Andrea Nakayama

Functional Nutritionist, Replenish PDX

“Smidge® is changing the lives of each and every one of my clients daily. Not all probiotics are the same, quality really matters here. I have researched and used almost every available probiotic with little to no progressive results, until I discovered GutPro®. Taking even one antibiotic can greatly shrink your healthy, beneficial immune system fighting bacteria and give the pathogenic bacteria a chance to proliferate and create a whole host of imbalances. Since using GutPro® I am seeing cases where deep cellular viral, bacterial, allergies, sensitivities, mood and behavior concerns greatly improving and in many cases, resulting in full correction of the imbalance.

As a Naturopath, I use Smidge® myself and have seen amazing health improvements. I would not have the thriving wellness practice I have today without using Smidge® to help facilitate my clients in their healing, rebuilding and repairing process. Thank you Smidge® for creating such a clean, bio available essential healing tool!”

Amber Quinoa is Grown by Prairie Quinoa in Manitoba.

The Incas of South America referred to quinoa as the “Mother Grain,” and considered it to be sacred. They grew quinoa in the high altitude of the Andes from present Educator, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile & Northern Argentina. There are 3200 varieties of quinoa in Bolivia and 2400 varieties in Peru. It is a small seed about the size of millet, very high in protein and is closer to the United Nation’s FAO ideal balance for amino acids than any other common cereal grain. It is particularly important for vegetarian diets and in correcting deficiencies in legume diets.

Quinoa is high in calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin E and some of the B vitamins. The health and nutritional benefits of Quinoa include: Quinoa is high in protein — its protein balance is similar to milk and has more protein compared to rice, millet or wheat. Quinoa is a good source of riboflavin — riboflavin helps reduce the frequency attacks in migraine sufferers by improving the energy metabolism within the brain and muscle cells. The saponins from quinoa – present in minute amounts in edible quinoa – are used to promote healing of skin injuries in South America, making it a good antiseptic. Quinoa is alkaline-forming, although it is not strongly alkaline-forming, it is comparable to wild rice, amaranth, and sprouted grains. It only has 172 calories per ¼ cup of dry quinoa. Since it is not related to wheat or grain, it’s gluten-free. Millions are discovering they feel better and lose weight when they reduce gluten grains or at least wheat products in their diet. It is a complex carbohydrate with low glycemic index – again it is good for weight management.

*This Quinoa is not certified organic but the grower claims they have never used glysophate and lab testing has found it clean of any pecticide residue in previous years.

"Perhaps the most nutritionally dense food in the world!"

Rice Bran Solubles are made from the bran and germ leftover when brown rice is husked to make white rice. The water-soluble components of the bran are then enzymatically extracted, leaving you with a very nutrionally rich food. Loaded with B vitamins, tocotrienols (vitamin E), CoQ10, and many other vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, they are a great addition to your daily smoothies, cereal, or even baked goods.

Ingredients: Stabilized Rice Bran and Germ (the most nutrient dense part of rice), separated from insoluble fibre without heat or chemicals. Kosher and Non GMO.

Smoothie: Blend in water 1/2 cup RBS, Almond Butter, Coconut Milk Powder, 2 Bananas and a squirt of Stevia or Honey. Flavour with cocoa or fruit. (serves 4 or 6)

Rice bran solubles are known for their ability to nourish the skin, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and even regulate blood sugar as seen in a study published by the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. They may be also be helpful in the prevention of arthritis, cancer, peripheral neuropathy and cardiovascular disease.

"Until recently, Vitamin E was thought to be composed of several TOCOPHEROLS, the most powerful form of which is ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL. Vitamin E is of great nutritional importance.
All body tissues, especially the adrenal and pituitary glands, have high concentrates of Vitamin E, but storage is mainly in the muscles, fatty tissues, and liver. Recently, a new class of compounds related to the TOCOPHEROLS has been discovered, and these compounds are called TOCOTRIENOLS. According to a noted expert in the field of Vitamin E research, ALPHA-TOCOTRIENOL is 40-60 times more potent than ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL. At the present time, there are four named TOCOTRIENOLS. An additional 20 unnamed TOCOTRIENOLS have been discovered. By way of example, DELTA-TOCOTRIENOL is 200 times more potent than ALPHA-TOCOTRIENOL."

Pregnant women must have adequate Vitamin E while fetus is forming to avoid narrowing of the body, cleft palate, crowded teeth, barrel chest and even muscular dystrophy. It is absolutely essential to health.
